This article provides an overview of the history and development of burnout research in the field of sport and performance. It discusses five eras of burnout research, highlighting the contributions and limitations of each era. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the past to inform future research and practice efforts in burnout in sport. It specifically focuses on the early longitudinal research era and the contemporary longitudinal research/meta-analysis era, discussing the advancements made in these periods. The article calls for more longitudinal research, the development of interventions, and the consideration of sport policies and sampling diversity in future burnout research.
