Abstract

A recent study from Aix-Marseille University in Marseille, France, highlights the importance of medullary thyroid cancer, which accounts for less than 5% of thyroid cancers but is known for its heterogeneity and aggressive behavior. The study reveals that in 25% of cases, medullary thyroid cancer may be associated with a rare genetic tumor syndrome called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN-2). The research also discusses the discovery of mutations in the RET proto-oncogene, which were identified 30 years ago and are responsible for MEN-2. The study emphasizes the significance of the first drug targeting this pathway, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the RET discovery. [Extracted from the article]
