Abstract

A recent report from the Medical University of Vienna discusses the evaluation of a new algorithm for dose calculation in radiation oncology. The algorithm, implemented in a research version of a treatment planning system called RayStation, was tested using CBCTs (cone-beam computed tomography) from head and neck, gynecology, and lung cancer patients. The resulting dose distributions were compared using a gamma analysis, and the new CBCT conversion method showed excellent agreement with the dose calculated using other methods. The main differences in dose calculations were attributed to anatomical variations between the planning CT and the corrected CBCT. [Extracted from the article]
