Abstract

A new study from Gujarat, India explores the impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The study found that AF and HFpEF often coexist and have overlapping symptoms and risk factors, making it challenging to diagnose HFpEF in AF patients. The study included 40 patients and found that AF patients had higher levels of NT-proBNP, greater left ventricular dysfunction, more prevalence of pulmonary artery hypertension, and higher degrees of diastolic dysfunction compared to patients with sinus rhythm. The study suggests that AF occurs in about half of HFpEF patients, particularly in women and younger individuals, and is associated with more severe forms of the disease.
