Abstract

A recent study conducted at the Military Rehabilitation Centre 'Aardenburg' in Doorn, Netherlands, explored the use of a modified passive dynamic ankle-foot orthosis (PDAFO) as a nonsurgical alternative for patients with high-energy lower extremity trauma (HELET) who were considering arthrodesis or amputation. The study involved seventeen patients who underwent a 6-week training program with the modified PDAFO. The results showed a significant reduction in pain and improvement in performance after the treatment, leading to none of the patients considering surgical intervention anymore. The researchers concluded that the modified PDAFO is an effective alternative to surgery. [Extracted from the article]
