Abstract

This article discusses a study conducted in Colombia that examined the impact of intraoperative aerobic culture on antibiotic therapy and clinical outcomes in patients with complicated appendicitis. The study found that a significant percentage of patients had positive results from intraoperative cultures, with the most common microorganisms being Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Some of these microorganisms showed resistance to beta-lactams. The study suggests that using intraoperative cultures can modify antibiotic therapy and reduce the risk of surgical site infection in patients with complicated appendicitis. The authors recommend routine use of intraoperative cultures in these patients to improve antibiotic management and reduce surgical site infections. [Extracted from the article]
