Abstract
- A recent study conducted at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio aimed to assess prognostic factors for long-term survival after surgery for colorectal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (CR GISTs). The study included 56 patients who underwent surgery for CR GISTs between 2002 and 2019. The researchers found that factors associated with improved recurrence-free survival (RFS) in high-risk patients were R0 resection (complete removal of the tumor) and perioperative imatinib treatment. In rectal GISTs, R1 resection (incomplete removal of the tumor) was associated with worse RFS regardless of perioperative imatinib treatment. This research provides valuable insights into the management of CR GISTs and highlights the importance of R0 resection and perioperative imatinib treatment in improving outcomes for high-risk patients.
