Abstract

A new report discusses research on the effectiveness of palliative care for patients with terminal cancer in reducing healthcare utilization. The study, conducted in Taiwan, analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Research Database and death certificates to identify patients who died of cancer between 2005 and 2018. The findings showed that enrolled patients in palliative care had significantly lower odds of emergency care utilization, CPR use, endotracheal intubation, and ICU admission compared to unenrolled patients. However, the difference in medical resource consumption between enrolled and unenrolled patients decreased with longer times before death. [Extracted from the article]
