Abstract
- A recent study from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom examined the use of high-dose acetylcysteine (NAC) in patients who have overdosed on paracetamol (acetaminophen). Paracetamol overdose is common but large ingestions are rare. The standard NAC regimen is effective in most patients, but there is some evidence that modifying the regimen to provide a higher dose of NAC may reduce the risk of liver damage. The researchers suggest that better risk stratification of patients could allow for targeted treatments for those at the highest risk of hepatotoxicity. This research has been peer-reviewed and published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. [Extracted from the article]
