Abstract

Researchers from Valduce Hospital in Como, Italy have reported on the findings of a study on colorectal medullary carcinoma (CMC), a rare subset of minimally differentiated carcinomas. The study found that CMC tends to be right-sided and present at an advanced stage, although distant metastases are rare at presentation. The liver and regional lymph nodes are the most common sites of metastases. The study also highlighted the lack of data on treatment strategies and short-term outcomes for CMC, as well as the diagnostic uncertainty and overtreatment that can result from its heterogeneous presentations and unclear prognostic significance. The researchers aim to bring attention to this rare histological subtype through the report of two cases. [Extracted from the article]
