Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom examined the impact of ischemic time on survival rates after lung transplantation. The study analyzed data from 1,565 adult lung transplants over a 12-year period and found that the use of cardiopulmonary bypass during implantation was associated with an increased risk of death for each hour of total ischemic time. However, when bypass was not used, there was no significant change in mortality with increasing ischemic time. The findings suggest that avoiding bypass may reduce the risk of poor outcomes in lung transplantation. [Extracted from the article]
