Abstract

A new report from the University of Queensland explores the importance of small-scale fisheries in terms of food security, nutrition, culture, ecosystem health, and livelihoods for millions of people. The research highlights the challenges faced by these fisheries, including climate change, privatization, and top-down decision-making. The study focuses on a case study from Sumbawa, Indonesia, where a foreign direct seafood exporter is working with small-scale fishers to source socially responsible seafood. The findings emphasize the need for a better understanding of the social, cultural, and economic ties of small-scale fishers in order to achieve sustainable seafood practices.
