Abstract

The article discusses the increasing use of disruptive climate protests and the corresponding harsher penalties imposed by governments. It highlights various examples of disruptive protests around the world, including in New Zealand, and suggests that such protests are likely to continue and escalate as the climate emergency worsens. The article acknowledges the importance of protest in free and democratic societies but also recognizes that the right to protest is not absolute and can be subject to reasonable legal limits. It calls for a balance to be struck between allowing legitimate dissent and maintaining the rights and freedoms of others. The article suggests that the current legal frameworks should be reviewed to ensure they are appropriate and that penalties for protest should not be disproportionate. [Extracted from the article]
