Abstract
- The article focuses on the goals and ethos of the journal "Language and Intercultural Communication," as it enters its 5th year of publication. When Language and Intercultural Communication was launched, edited by Mike Kelly and the author himself, the very first editorial invited readers on a voyage. Needless to say, the evolution of the journal has taken place against a restless backdrop--world events have stimulated intellectual engagement with a sense of heightened urgency; the changing identity of the university in the 21st century and the shifting place of languages in education has continued to produce debates; a perception of the complexity of the field has been sharpened; and gaps in scholarship increasingly clarified. This has certainly drawn the journal into broader debates with colleagues from beyond language teaching who have brought their insights to a complex field. One of the paper in the present issue of the journal explores how language has been instrumental in negotiating new identities for Spanish American/Chicano writers.
