A diagrammatic approach to performance art redefines the medium's aesthetic parameters through its cartographic relation to the body and memory. By using Deleuze's concepts of diagram, map and tracing, this essay demonstrates how ephemeral art performances by Rauschenberg, Beuys and Paolini create a territory that is both abstract and concrete and connected to persistent visual art in the forms of lithographs, photographs and installations.
