Abstract

This article presents information on scented plants, from climbers to bulbs and annuals to trees, that can easily occupy every niche in the garden--and they will bloom in every season for year-round sensory pleasure. Sweet spring scents are subtle in rondeletia, freesia and viburnum, while in summer Kahili ginger, frangipani, angel's trumpet, liliums, roses and tuberoses increase in potency as warmth enhances their scent-producing chemicals. Some sweet scents can be cloying--in spring wisteria, pink jasmine, osmanthus delavayi, stanhopea orchid and port-wine magnolia are heaven on a breeze, but can be annoying when concentrated.
