Abstract

The strength of Meek's book lies in the extensive interviews with MST activists, educators, and others, that illustrate the diverse journeys of the residents of 17 de Abril and the surrounding areas. Agrarian social movements hold the potential to advance understanding and practices of food sovereignty. In the final chapter, Meek summarizes the book by reiterating the importance of political economy in understanding how the history of southern Pará influences the land of the 17 de Abril settlement, resource distribution, and knowledge systems.
