Abstract
- Similarly to the other European countries, between 2018 and 2020 the historical events connected to the end of World War I were evoked in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. In all three countries, considerable attention was paid to the round anniversaries, a clear proof of not only the importance still played in this region of events acted out a hundred years before, but also of the continuing use of history as a source of legimation by the in- dividual governments. Evoking the past divided the region along the traditional fissures - while in Slovakia the partial realisation of national independence, and in Romania the national unity, were celebrated in 2018, Hungary commemorated the dissolution of her traditional grandeur, at the same time remembering national cohesion transcending political boundaries. Mutual gestures of reconciliation were not missing either. Beyond the dominantly ethno-centric interpretation of the anniversaries, however, a common element in all three national versions of memory politics was a demonstration of national unity and of a firm belief in the future.
