Abstract
- Investigative psychology, the field of psychology examined in detail by Professor David Canter, is not about replacing investigators, but about putting psychological expertise at the service of the investigation, helping to define the profile of the possible perpetrator of a series of crimes by comparing investigative evidence, psychological-relational evidence and traces found at the scene of the crimes. The investigation of violent crime takes place through a procedure defined as 'criminal investigative analysis', one of the ways used to define criminal profiling. Our paper examines crime scene, victim elements, staging, modus operandi and signature, personation, undoing and mutilation. A sub-chapter is also devoted to the transition from criminal profiling to criminal and investigative psychology, presenting tables related to: the 'organised' serial killer and the crime scene, the 'organised' serial killer profile, the 'disorganised' serial killer and the crime scene, and the criminal profile of the 'disorganised' serial killer. After presenting Vernon Geberth's model, namely the criminal profile of the psychopathic serial killer and the socio-demographic profile of the psychopathic serial killer, we examine the three themes proposed by David Canter, namely the 'expressive-impulsive', the 'instrumental-opportunistic' and the 'instrumental-cognitive' themes. Finally, we conduct a brief analysis from the crime scene to the offender profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
