Abstract

The article presents observations on the theories of Bibliographic organization. Considerable intellectual effort is being put forth in an attempt to fit theories of information to bibliographic problems. Bibliographers are not the only specialists concerned with the possible applications of information theory to other disciplines. The communication engineers have demonstrated quite conclusively that any logically communicable information may be coded into a two-symbol code. This fundamental principle has made it economically and practically possible for machines to be made by man for transmission, storage, and manipulation of information. Bibliographical organization cannot use an absolute coding method because of the changes through time in the meaning of the code.
