Abstract

The article describes the isolation and measurement of two primary social attitudes. One of these is Religionism, which is defined by scales for the measurement of attitudes toward evolution, birth control, and belief in the reality of God. The second is Humanitarianism, which is defined by scales for the measurement of attitudes toward war, capital punishment, and the treatment of criminals. The sociologists now wishes to describe the isolation and measurement of a third primary attitude that is Nationalism, which is described by scales for the measurement of attitudes toward law, censorship, patriotism, and communism. The author wishes to consider the intercorrelations among three different combinations of the various attitude scales. One of these combinations includes data from the scales measuring attitudes toward God, evolution, birth control, war, capital punishment, and the treatment of criminals. This combination will be recognized as the one from which the first two primary attitudes were isolated.
