Abstract
- This article discusses the future of sustainable building industry of the U.S. In certain markets, sustainable design is becoming standard. There is a market for sustainable design. In December 2004, the periodical "The Economist" reported that in the U.S., buildings account for 65 percent of electricity consumption, 36 percent of total energy use, and 30 percent of greenhouse-gas emissions. It is the point where green buildings should come for rescue. However, there are two big challenges in the green business sector. First, a clear definition of what actually constitutes being "green." Defining sustainability and what comprises a sustainable building remain a challenge. And second, designers must present sustainable design as a sound business investment.
