Coming of Age in Academe--Information Science at 21.

The article discusses issues related to information science. Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, Vannevar Bush, more than anyone else in the U.S., had been concerned with ways to facilitate the transfer of scientific information toward the very practical goal of winning the war. This done, he turned to the extension of these means to the service of research more broadly. He called for the creation of new tools, using then-existing technology, which would free the researcher from enslavement to repetitive rote operations.
