Abstract
- The cutting of titanium alloys is considered. Measured are proposed for improving the machining of these alloys. Decrease in the vibrational amplitude of the system consisting of the machine tool, attachment, tool, and workpiece in cutting may significantly improve the machining of such alloys. Methods are outlined for improving the vibrational stability of this system, the machining precision, and the tool life in thread cutting by taps and in boring: specifically, the tool–workpiece contact area in the cutting zone may be decreased; and the strength and rigidity of the tool may be increased. The first method is fundamental in increasing tool life and improving hole machining. On that basis, highly efficient and patented designs have been developed for taps and associated equipment and for drills. Test results are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
