- Truog, who had more interest in soil chemistry, summed up his survey experience as: 'For the most part, we got along with such commonly understood descriptive words as dark or light, tight or open, top-soil or subsoil, level or hilly, and sand, silt and clay. Kellogg had little time to get used to his new position: Marbut died in Harbin in August 1935 and Kellogg, only 32 years old, was appointed to succeed him.
