Abstract

The article focuses on hostility and its implications in the field of international relations. The study is concerned with the investigation of some dynamic problems of international tension by means of a verbal test. It is designed to find what relationships exist among expressions of hostility in three kinds of social situations: everyday situations, professional (teaching) situations and international situations. The hypothesis are (a) different categories of hostile responses exist in given social situations and (b) measures of hostility among the three different kinds of social situations are related. The construction of the instrument used in this study involved the following steps: (a) development of brief situations, (b) administration of these situations in open-ended form, (c) categorization of open-ended answers and refinement of the situations, (d) referral of situations with categorized answers to judges and (e) preparation of the final inventory. The instrument includes short verbal situations in three fields of social behavior: everyday, professional (teaching) and international.
