Abstract

The present explorative study was done to find out the current technological adoption and problems of broiler entrepreneurs including disease prevalence among the farms. Information was gathered by visiting selected chicken farms and interviewing the owners using a prepared questionnaire. The study found several bacterial diseases among the broilers including chronic respiratory disease, Escherichia coli infection, Omphalitis, and viral diseases such as Gumboro (Infectious bursal disease-IBD). The study also found cases of Coccidiosis and mortality from unknown etiology. The study found 14.09 per cent mortality in broiler farms in all the seasons combined. The present study found 4.32, 4.76, and 5.10 per cent mortality in winter, summer, and rainy seasons respectively. The study clearly highlighted the presence of almost all important diseases in broiler birds causing economic loss to farmers and ultimately to the country. The present study conclusively indicates the need to implement biosecurity measures, not just for farmers, but also for veterinarians, public health practitioners, and other stakeholders involved directly or indirectly in poultry production in India.
