Abstract

An experimental study was performed to determine the characteristics of the stimulus necessary to produce the dumping syndrome. It was apparent that in order for both the vasomotor and gastrointestinal symptoms of the dumping syndrome to become manifest the stimulus must be hypertonic, absorbable and metabolically active. Our study confirmed that the dumping syndrome is a metabolic as well as a mechanical disturbance and established a rationale for the medical treatment of this surgical complication.
