Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to discover whether there is a significant change in the Egyptian family size in the United States in comparison with that in Egypt and to compare the family size of the present adult generation with that of their parents and grandparents irrespective of location. According to the author, this is the first demographic study on Egyptian immigrants in the United States, and is exploratory in nature. Although many studies have been done by Egyptian and foreign demographers on the Egyptian family in Egypt, none dealt with Egyptian families in the United States. A difference was found to exist between the groups based on educational level completed by the husband and the wife. Another difference was found between the planned family sizes of the respondent, the family he comes from, and the family his father comes from. This reflects the changes in the Egyptian family as a result of the industrialization trend and consequent urbanization in Egypt and the contact with a western culture in the United States.
