Abstract

The milling industry played a key part in the industrial development of Hungary. The greatest and most modern steam mills were constructed at Buda and Pest from the middle of the nineteenth century. In the same period, the twin cities went through the process from which they emerged, united in 1873 as Budapest, as a modern metropolis. Exploring the relationship between the city and the milling industry, the paper focuses on the question of how the urban development and the presence of the steam mills influenced each other. The period under investigation starts in 1841, when the first steam mill was erected, and ends in 2008, when the last building of its kind was demolished. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
