Abstract

In recent years, a new wave of biocompatable, bioactive, bioresorbable and biodegradable metals were developed by researchers for biomedical applications because of the excellent properties of magnesium metal matrix composite. This present study aims to fabricate the AZ31-Sn/2 wt% nano-Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> composites with various weight fractions (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 wt%) of micro-tin (Sn) particles using the stir casting technique. The effect of Sn particles reinforcement on mechanical properties, microstructure and wear performance was examined. The EDX analyses and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the hard particles distribution and the interface between the AZ31 alloy and reinforcement particles. The mechanical properties and wear behaviour are increased in AZ31-Sn/nano-Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> composites compared with the AZ31/nano-Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> composites. Furthermore, these outcomes recommend that for applications demanding high compressive strength and wear performance, the AZ31-Sn/nano-Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> will be effective composites.
