Abstract

Coastal wetlands rely on sediment for exchange and development, and a study on the temporal trend of sedimentation can provide a tool for comprehensive interpretation of how the wetland will evolve. To reveal long-term sedimentation processes in the Xuan Thuy Natural Wetland Reserve in Vietnam, five sediment cores were taken for sediment chronology by <superscript>210</superscript>Pb techniques. Results show that, from 1930s to 1965 period, the wetland experienced a low sediment accumulation rate (SAR) but from 1965, SAR started to increase gradually. Changes in the sedimentation process at different locations started in 1980. For the last 40 years, SAR at site A decreased from 1.70 ± 0.18 to 0.77 ± 0.11 cm year<superscript>−1</superscript> while at sites B, C, D, and E, SARs kept increasing. For the last 40 years, SARs at these sites have elevated average values of 1.32 ± 0.29, 1.64 ± 0.37, 1.73 ± 0.46, and 1.74 ± 0.43 cm year<superscript>−1</superscript>, respectively. According to the recent temporal trend of sedimentation, it is predicted that in about 75 years, the Con Ngan tidal flat will be above the high tide water level. In about 80 years, swamps for mangrove forests in the Con Lu tidal flat will be displaced to the area along the Tra River tributary and the lagoons for shellfish farming at the end of Con Ngan and Con Lu.
