Abstract
- To significantly ease the burden on the government in providing fossil fuel subsidies and to reduce CO<subscript>2</subscript> pollution from the transportation sector, the Indonesian government issued a regulation on the acceleration of battery-powered electric vehicle (EV) program for road transportation. To speed up the adoption of this program, aside from encouraging automakers to build new EVs, converting the existing internal combustion engine cars (ICEs) to EVs can be used as an alternative solution. This paper describes the conversion process of a light local-assembled ICE car named Fin Komodo into a battery EV. The conversion included the replacement of Fin Komodo's engine to a 5 kW electric motor and its controller and the installation of a 72V 40 Ah lithium battery pack and its onboard charger. Moreover, a CCS 2 inlet socket and a voltage divider circuit which is based on IEC 61851-1 standard are used so that the converted car's battery can be charged using an AC type 2 plug charging station. The driving test showed that the EV Fin Komodo can run at a maximum speed of around 62 km per hour, while the charging test demonstrated a successful charging process using a public charging station.
