Abstract

The article focuses on the history of smuggling in New York. It mentions that merchants and farmers on Long Island used its many coves to send farm produce to foreign ships in Long Island Sound, in addition New York City merchants began to smuggle some goods by small boats to foreign ships waiting in New York Harbor or off Sandy Hook, and because of the economic consequences of the embargo and later War of 1812, it would take until 1820 for New York City's economy to fully recover.
