Abstract

FEATURES The story tells of an Italian monk who lived around 610 C.E. While working in the monastery bakery, the monk had some extra dough left over from his bread-making. Although some say the pretzel came aboard the Mayflower with the Pilgrims in 1608, the pretzel was actually brought to America with German immigrants, called the Pennsylvania Dutch, in the early 1700s. Today, Pennsylvania is called the nation's pretzel capital because 80% of all pretzels made in the United States are made in the state. [Extracted from the article]
