Abstract
- As predation by grass snakes was the most common cause of mortality in this study, the inference to be drawn is that the yellow-bellied toad's aposematic coloration is not sufficient defense against these snakes. Telemetric research reveals predation on the poisonous yellow-bellied toad Bombina variegata The most common predator of adult yellow-bellied toads turned out to be the grass snake I Natrix natrix i (Figure 1c), which devoured toads with transmitters attached to them. The reason for the extremely limited data on the predation of adult yellow-bellied toads may lie in the difficulties of actually observing predation in the wild. [Extracted from the article]
