Abstract
- The Haitian Revolution represents the only permanently successful uprising of enslaved people in world history. So far, it has attracted little attention in Germany, both publicly and in historical research, even though it is now considered the third great revolution of the late eighteenth century, alongside the French and American Revolutions. In French debates on colonial heritage, on the other hand, the Haitian Revolution has gained a great deal of prominence, as it has in discussions on postcolonialism and questions about the racist character of capitalism. The article analyses these debates and shows how the Haitian Revolution also raises fundamental questions about the character of the Enlightenment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
