Abstract
- A Commonwealth Support for Puerto Rico's independence faded after Puerto Rico was granted commonwealth status in 1952. As U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans can live in the United States and travel freely back and forth to Puerto Rico. An Unincorporated Territory The United States claimed Puerto Rico after defeating Spain in the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Independence Movement In the 1930s, a worldwide economic collapse combined with dissatisfaction about its political status led Puerto Rico to push for independence from the United States.
