Abstract

When the court was going through a serious crisis caused by Taiping Rebellion, different forces mentioned above made conscious moves to interpret the court gazette to their advantage. Eighteenth-century readers digested edicts and memorials thoroughly and regarded the court gazettes as textbooks sharing statecraft knowledge, while readers in the nineteenth century cared more about personnel change. However, Mokros discovers the significance of gazettes as a unique channel through which political and intellectual elites experienced the Qing dynasty and its government.
