Abstract

Single crystals of a new quaternary oxide, barium hexadecayttrium tetrasilicon tritriacontaoxide, BaY<subscript>16</subscript>Si<subscript>4</subscript>O<subscript>33</subscript>, were obtained from a melt-solidified sample prepared by heating a mixture of BaCO<subscript>3</subscript>, Y<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript>, and SiO<subscript>2</subscript> at 2073 K. X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that Ba(SiO<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>4</subscript> orthosilicate clusters in which a Ba atom is surrounded by four SiO<subscript>4</subscript> tetrahedra were isolated in a framework composed of Y and O in the structure of BaY<subscript>16</subscript>Si<subscript>4</subscript>O<subscript>33</subscript>. The dielectric constant measured for polycrystalline ceramics of BaY<subscript>16</subscript>Si<subscript>4</subscript>O<subscript>33</subscript> sintered at 1953 K was 13 (298 K, 1 MHz), and the thermal expansion coefficient was 8.70 × 10<superscript>-6</superscript> K<superscript>-1</superscript> (298-873 K), which are close to the values previously reported for Y<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript>.
