Abstract

In developing regions, adult learners who are diabetic may not afford conventional diabetes care due to their income status and financial burdens. The present study determined the effect of a rational-emotive cognitive behavioural coaching (RE-CBC) as a stress management program for assisting adult learners with type 2 diabetes achieve reduced stress level. The study sample comprised 119 adult learners who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and were stressed. These were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 60) or a waitlisted control group (n = 59). While the control group participants were waitlisted for 12 weeks, the intervention group received RE-CBC treatment within this period. Participants' stress scores were computed at baseline, post-test and follow-up. The results demonstrate that adult learners who participated in RE-CBC showed significantly reduced stress level at post-test which was maintained at follow-up compared to those in the waitlisted control group.
