Abstract

Given the central role of trees in mitigating and responding to climate change, it is surprising that there are still fundamental features of how trees grow, adjust their development and physiology for environmental conditions, and transport water through their woody bodies that remain poorly understood. A commentary on: 'Seasonal patterns of increases in stem girth, vessel development and hydraulic function in deciduous tree species' The new paper by [10] in this issue provides new insights into the seasonal cycles of perennial growth in angiosperm trees, and how this is related to the development and function of water-conducting tissues.
