Abstract

This article presents a study on the qualitative superiority of the self figure in children's drawings. For this study subjects were 100 children, 50 boys and 50 girls, comprising about half the fifth-grade population of a small Midwestern city. They represent all children who were between 10 years, 0 months, and 10 years, 11 months of age and were enrolled in one of 6 classrooms in 4 schools. Three additional female children were drawn at random from a seventh classroom to obtain equal numbers of subjects of each sex. Socioeconomic status of the children was not studied on an individual basis, but the residential areas in which the schools were located ranged in the writer's judgment from low average to superior for the community.
