Abstract

This paper discusses how to navigate between research and innovation projects of different time frames in a corporate setting. Building on three case studies, the paper presents views on, challenges in, and the expected outcomes of agile approaches and reflects on short-, mid- and long-term innovation horizons. The findings shed light on the challenges that emerge when conducting research over different time frames. On the one hand, there are short-term development needs and clear quarterly business goals, which align with the agile approach adopted at the corporation. On the other hand, there are long-term research goals with uncertainties in the operational environment and uncovered business opportunities. The paper opens a wider discussion on the opportunities and limitations of agile approach in mid- and long-term research and innovation. The paper concludes with suggestions for the ways in which agile research approach should be developed in order to meet the requirements set by mid- and long-term activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
