Abstract
- The article explores folk stories about the city of Sikeston, founded by John Sikes, in Missouri. It provides a history of Sikeston's transition into an agricultural frontier and the segregation of African Americans from the rest of the white population in Sikeston by two crossing railroads tracks called the Sunet Addition. It looks back at the story of the lynching of African American and Sunset resident Cleo Wright and considers the possibility that Sikeston was once a sundown town.
