Abstract

Researchers and nutritionists are looking for alternative sources of nutrients for animals. Several studies have shown that some algal species improve the nutritional value of animal feed rations. These organisms contain various biologically active substances, including health-promoting lipids. Supplementation may change meat fatty acid profile. Meat from pigs given marine microalgae contains higher levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. These substances have beneficial effects on human health. Excessive intake of fatty acids from marine microalgae increases meat susceptibility to oxidation.
