Abstract
- The article discusses character Circe, the minor goddess with magic powers who enjoyed transforming men, usually her discarded lovers, into animals in classical mythology in machine plays and tragic operas composed during the seventeenth century in France. It notes theme of dis-enchantment as Circe's magic is overruled by a more powerful god to change men back into their original shapes. It presents humans as powerless, subjected to alteration but annulled by exterior forces such as gods.
