Abstract

The decoration is an essential element in the beauty of a building design. Most of the decorative elements found in building design are associated with the design concept and have implicit meaning. Therefore, the paper aims to identify a variety of ornaments found in Masjid Muhammadi Kota Bharu, Kelantan. In addition, this paper also aims to describe the Malays and Western ornament found in that mosque. The methodology used in this study is observation and interview. These observations were made at the Masjid Muhammadi, and interviews with two (2) field experts were conducted to obtain the information. This study found three types of ornaments, namely calligraphy, flora and geometric motifs, used in Masjid Muhammadi. These ornaments are located in four (4) different structures, namely the pillars of the building, the back of the building, the prayer hall and the front entrance of the building. Therefore, the design found in the Masjid Muhammadi shows one of the design identities in Malaysia. This study also uses semiotic theory to look at the symbols in the Masjid Muhammadi, which could assist in understanding the identity of the builders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
