ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF ALLELO CHEMICALS ISOLATED FROM Lagascea mollis Cav.

Abstract

Two new allelochemicals (A) m.f. C<subscript>35</subscript>H<subscript>44</subscript>O<subscript>23</subscript>, m.p. 231-234oC [M<superscript>+</superscript>] 832 and (B) m.f. C<subscript>33</subscript>H<subscript>40</subscript>O<subscript>21</subscript>, m.p. 244-2460C, [M<superscript>+</superscript>] 772 have been isolated from ethanolic extract of the roots of plant Lagascea mollis Cav. along with two known compounds luteolin 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (C) and Isorhamentin (D). The structure of the two new allelochemicals have been characterised as 5,7,3'-trihydroxy-3,6,4'-trimethoxy flavone-5-O-β-D-glucopranosyl-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→4)-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside (A) and 5, 7,3'5'-tetrahydroxy-3-methoxy flavone-7-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-5'-O-α-L-rahmnopyranoside (B) by various chemical degradations, colour reactions and spectral analysis. In this paper, the two new compounds A and B were screened against various bacteria and fungi and showed good results. Antioxidant activity of the two compounds A and B was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging method. The result showed that both the compounds may be used as antioxidants agents.
