Abstract

Three nonlinear optical materials Cd<subscript>4</subscript>REO(BO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> (RE = Sm, Eu, Tb) have been synthesized through high-temperature solid-state reactions. In their crystal structures, Cd(1)O<subscript>8</subscript> and Cd(2)O<subscript>6</subscript> polyhedra are interconnected via sharing edges and corners into a 3D anion framework with two types of tunnels based on 4- and 7-membered rings; the BO<subscript>3</subscript> groups are grafted into the above-mentioned types, creating new tunnels based on Cd<subscript>4</subscript>B<subscript>3</subscript> seven-membered rings, which are filled by RE<superscript>3+</superscript> cations. Powder SHG measurements revealed that the Cd<subscript>4</subscript>REO(BO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> (RE = Sm, Eu, Tb) samples display SHG signals that are approximately 1.2, 5.6 and 1.5 times that of the KDP sample. In addition, Cd<subscript>4</subscript>EuO(BO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> and Cd<subscript>4</subscript>TbO(BO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> emit red and green light, respectively. The lifetime of the Eu(<superscript>5</superscript>D<subscript>0</subscript>) state for λ<subscript>ex,em</subscript> = 464, 610 nm in Cd<subscript>4</subscript>EuO(BO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> is measured to be about 1.43 ms whereas the lifetime of the Tb(<superscript>5</superscript>D<subscript>4</subscript>) state for λ<subscript>ex,em</subscript> = 376, 543 nm in Cd<subscript>4</subscript>TbO(BO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> is measured to be about 1.01 ms.
